Magnetization and pole patterns

Use direction, polarity and drawing illustrations to communicate magnetization and assembly requirements.

Identify the direction and working face.

N and S label north and south poles. Arrows show internal magnetization from S toward N, not external field lines. Colors identify polarity and are not a measured field map.

Axial magnetization

Axial magnetization

Magnetization follows the cylinder axis; the end faces carry opposite poles. The ring is shown in an axial section.

Block magnetization sections

Block magnetization axes

Three sectional views show thickness, length and width axes. Identify the dimension axis on the drawing; do not infer it from the longest or shortest side.

Diametric magnetization

Diametric magnetization

Magnetization is parallel along one diameter, with poles on opposite sides. It differs from true radial magnetization with poles on inner and outer cylindrical faces.

True radial magnetization

True radial magnetization

The example has S on the inner surface and N on the outer surface, with radial magnetization. Reverse polarity may also be specified. Feasibility depends on material, size and orientation process.

Outer circumferential poles

Circumferential multipole pattern

Example: eight alternating poles (four pole pairs) around the outer circumference. This describes pole positions, not circumferential magnetization. Specify pole count and phase.

Planar multipole pattern

Planar multipole pattern

Alternating poles on one working face. ⊙ denotes magnetization toward the viewer; ⊗ denotes away. The opposite face requires the actual design.

Put polarity requirements on the drawing.

Example: magnetize through thickness t; the designated mating face is N; apply an N-face dot mark. Specify dimensions, tolerances, magnetic requirements and marking location separately. This is a notation example, not a product specification.

SpecifyReview
Direction and pole faceIdentify the dimension axis, view or mating face and N/S polarity.
Pole count and registrationFor multipole designs, specify count, pitch, reference features and phase.
Marking and deliverySpecify pole marking, location, magnetized/unmagnetized delivery and assembly sequence.

Review sequence: working face → axis and polarity → pole count and registration → marking and delivery.
