MATERIALS & PROPERTIES / SELECTION REFERENCE

Grades and magnetic properties

Read common sintered grades and parameter definitions, then review operating temperature, magnetic circuit and specifications.

Read the grade before comparing values.

Grade notation

For a common sintered grade such as N42SH, the number identifies an energy-product class. The suffix identifies a coercivity family relevant to temperature selection. A higher number is not always the best fit.

Br · Remanence

Flux density remaining after saturation when the applied field returns to zero; not a surface-probe reading.

HcB · Normal coercivity

Reverse field needed to reduce flux density B to zero.

HcJ · Intrinsic coercivity

Reverse field needed to reduce magnetic polarization J to zero; related to resistance to demagnetization.

(BH)max · Maximum energy product

Maximum magnitude of the B–H product on the demagnetization curve; not a direct measure of holding force.

Reference temperatures are selection information, not guaranteed limits for every geometry. Demagnetization also depends on shape, circuit, opposing fields and conditions. Curie temperature is not the permitted operating temperature.
